1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
"Classic Muscle Car"
In January 1969, at the age of twenty-one, Johnny acquired a classic Chevrolet through a trade with local dealer Big Jim Owens, who was known for having the best used cars in Morristown. Jim was interested in Johnny's 1964 Chevelle. The Chevrolet was a numbers-matching car with only 25,000 miles on it (see Plaza Motors photo).
The car served as Janet's daily driver for many years before being parked in 1977 due to its poor fuel economy. The 396 cubic inch motor was a gas guzzler, leading to its replacement with a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. As with many cars built in the '60s, the Chevrolet eventually needed a rebuild and remained parked until 2012 when Johnny embarked on a frame-off restoration.
They planned to take it on the road, but their plans were derailed by the Covid pandemic.
As a side note, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is still in the family. It's now owned by their daughter and is currently being rebuilt by their grandson.
